Впереди век физики!
Самый востребованный человек в нашем журнале — Эйнштейн. И, пожалуй, самый нерадивый. Только по известным биографическим причинам он избегает увольнения. А ведь не проходит и недели, чтобы в отдел физики не пришло новое письмо с убийственной критикой взглядов «геноссе Альберта». Если бы такие письма получал я, то, наверное, тоже полвека на работу бы не выходил.
В этот юбилейный год — год Эйнштейна (сто лет назад он создал частную теорию относительности) — корреспонденция, фактически адресованная ему, как никогда велика. Его ругают за промахи, его журят за непонимание основ физики, ему доверительно подсказывают, как исправить ошибки в придуманных им уравнениях.
Иной раз кажется, что Эйнштейн — единственный известный кому-либо физик XX века. Он обречен отвечать за все грехи современной физики, за ее сложность, алогичность, фундаментальную удаленность от практики. Здание физики, выстроенное величайшими учеными XX века, непостижимо вознеслось, скрылось в заоблачной выси. А отвечает за просчеты строителей бедный ключарь, поджидающий нас, дилетантов, у входа. Herr Einstein, словно в насмешку, говорит нам: «Einsteigen, bittel»[* «Пожалуйста, входите!» (искаж. немецк.)] Куда ж входить? Здание без окошек, дверей и лестниц. Тут надо быть семижды семи пядей во лбу, чтобы исхитриться проникнуть.
На страницах нашего журнала регулярно появляются статьи о современной физике, о самых странных задачах, что волнуют ведущих ученых мира. Статьи эти подстать «проклятым вопросам физики» — страшно далеки они от академизма. Что ж, в отсутствие проказника Эйнштейна мы тоже вольничаем порой как хотим.
Но в последний месяц юбилейного эйнштейновского года, наконец, чувствуешь важность момента. Оглядываешь строй наследников «герр Гения» и доставшийся им фронт работ — благо, ряд научных журналов и физических обществ попытался в этом году оценить важнейшие открытия XXI века, то есть предсказать, в какой области физики прославятся будущие «быстрые разумом Невтоны» и, конечно, Эйнштейны. Но впечатление обманывает: исследователи открыли новые способы производства таинственного антивещества — практически неисчерпаемого источника энергии. О его использовании мечтают и медики, и, конечно, военные. В интернете можно найти сообщения о позитронном оружии, которое имеет ряд преимуществ по сравнению с ядерным и термоядерным оружием. Энергия, получаемая из антивещества, могла бы приводить в движение и самолеты, и космические корабли. Станет ли XXI век эпохой «антивещественной энергетики»?
