Спелеология, или "пещероведение", комплексная отрасль знаний — наука о пещерах, изучающая их происхождение, морфологию, микроклимат, скрытые в них реки и озера, встречающиеся иногда скопления снега и различные формы ледяных образований, растения, современную спелеофауну и остатки вымерших животных, следы материальной культуры некогда обитавшего в пещерах доисторического человека, выполненные им настенные рисунки и скульптурные изображения, современное использование этих природных пустот и т. д. К названным объектам изучения спелеологии следует также добавить некоторые биологические и физиологические проблемы, связанные с длительным пребыванием человека в изолированной от внешнего мира среде в глубинах Земли.
Крупные пещеры в большинстве случаев выработаны в растворимых водой горных породах и относятся к карстовым явлениям. О карстовых пещерах и полостях, уходящих в бездны Земли, называемых естественными колодцами, шахтами, пропастями, говорится и в предлагаемой вниманию читателей книге.
Научно-популярные книги об исследованиях карстовых пещер неоднократно издавались в Советском Союзе, причем это были произведения как наших советских спелеологов и карстоведов (например, "Вслед за каплей воды" В. Н. Дублянского и В. В. Илюхина и многие другие), так и зарубежных (книги Н. Кастере, Л. Якуча, У. Холидея). В соответствии с комплексным характером самой науки спелеологическими исследованиями занимаются различные специалисты — географы, геологи, гидрогеологи, минералоги, биологи, палеогеографы. Глубокий интерес проявляют к пещерам палеонтологи, археологи, историки и т. д. Значи тельный вклад в исследование пещер и пропастей вносят также спелеологи-спортсмены ("спелеотуристы"), ведь для покорения глубоких карстовых пропастей и пещер приходится осуществлять трудные спуски, преодолевать водные преграды — сифоны, применяя специальное снаряжение. Во многих странах существуют научные и спортивные спелеологические общества, группы, клубы, образующие национальные объединения.
В СССР организованы институты карстоведения и спелеологии: всесоюзный — в Перми и местный — в Уфе (оба на общественных началах), спелеологический стационар в Кунгуре, Карстово-спелеологическая комиссия Географического общества СССР в Ленинграде, Спелеологический совет при Президиуме Академии наук Грузинской ССР, Лабора тория карстологии и спелеологии Института географии им. Вахушти АН Грузинской ССР в Тбилиси и ряд других учреждений, занимающихся вопросами спелеологии. Карстоведческие и спелеологические исследования координируются Ко миссией по карсту и спелеологии (с основным руководством в Перми), которая подчинена Научному совету по инженер ной геологии и гидрогеологии Академии наук СССР. В Москве и во многих других городах Советского Союза организованы спелеологические секции, объединяемые Центральной секцией спелеотуризма при Центральном совете по туризму и экскурсиям ВЦСПС (Москва).
Международным объединением спелеологов служит Международный спелеологический союз (МСС), который каждые четыре года созывает международные спелеологические конгрессы и в своей деятельности опирается на постоянно действующие тематические комиссии (и подкомиссии) по раз личным вопросам научных и прикладных спелеологических исследований. Недавно Советский Союз вступил в члены этого международного спелеологического объединения, что должно способствовать дальнейшему укреплению наших международных контактов и активной деятельности советских карстоведов, спелеологов и других специалистов в ко миссиях МСС.
В настоящем исследовании М. Сифра затрагивается сравнительно небольшой, но важный круг проблем спелеологических исследований — это вопросы общей спелеологии, включая подземную гидрографию, гидрогеологию и гляциологию, и некоторые вопросы прикладной спелеологии. Наибольшее внимание автор уделяет исследованию биологических и физиологических проблем.
Имя французского исследователя пещер Мишеля Сифра уже известно советским читателям по его ранней работе " Hors du temps " ("Вне времени"), Paris, 1963, опубликован ной издательством "Мир" в переводе на русский язык под названием "Один в глубинах Земли" (Москва, 1966). Новая книга М. Сифра шире по содержанию в сравнении с предыдущей (материал ранее опубликованной книги кратко изложен во второй главе) и знакомит читателя с новыми объектами исследований в малоизвестных нашим специалистам карстовых районах, с постановкой оригинальных экспериментов и использованием своеобразной методики. Но прежде чем перейти к характеристике книги, вкратце ознакомимся с биографией автора.
Мишель Сифр родился в 1939 году в Ницце. Увлечение геологией и спелеологией у него проявилось еще в детстве, с того момента, когда десятилетний мальчишка в одиночку, не без боязни проник с карманным электрическим фонариком в пещеру за холмами лицея в парке Ниццы. Там на глубине нескольких десятков метров он обнаружил в глинистом пласте окаменелости — морские раковины, по которым определяют возраст геологических наслоений. Его дальнейшая жизнь является как бы логическим продолжением данного эпизода. С тех пор на его счету многие сотни исследованных карстовых пещер и пропастей, а также значительные геологические открытия в области стратиграфии — того раз дела геологии, который изучает последовательность залегания и взаимоотношения слоев и толщ горных пород наряду с определением их возраста.
