Принятие на вооружение АК-47, несмотря на ряд недостатков, несомненно явилось большим достижением отечественной оружейной науки. Автомат полюбили в войсках за простоту устройства, безотказность и компактность (по сравнению с карабином СКС). Однако, он оказался недёшев и перевооружение легло непомерным бременем на обескровленную войной экономику страны и грозило растянуться на десятилетия. Производство новых автоматов лишь незначительно превосходило их убыль в результате интенсивной боевой подготовки. Поэтому карабины СКС находились на вооружении даже мотострелковых подразделений вплоть до середины 60-х годов, а в некоторых родах войск и более того. Кроме того, повышение требований к мобильности войск заставляло пересмотреть и весовую нагрузку экипировки каждого бойца, масса оружия с боекомплектом в составе которой составляла (для АК-47 с четырьмя магазинами и 120 патронами, ремнём, штыком, подсумком и ЗиП’ом) 9 кг. Все эти требования обретут законную силу лишь в 1953 г. при отработке тактико-технических требований к новому облегчённому автомату. А пока вернёмся к 1951 г.

Автомат Коробова ТКБ-454 обр. 52 г. с деревянным прикладом
Недостатки АК-47, так и не устранённые ни до принятия его на вооружение, ни при налаживании серийного производства, сподвигли ряд других конструкторов-оружейников продолжить работы по проектированию автоматов своих конструкций, причём ГАУ заняло пассивно-выжидательную позицию (а вдруг получится), а Министерство Оборонной промышленности профинансировало их. Пионером этих работ стал представитель ЦКБ-14 талантливый тульский конструктор Г. А. Коробов. Уже в 1951 г. он представил на полигонные испытания свой автомат очень оригинальной конструкции с редко используемой схемой работы автоматики – полусвободным затвором. В целом автомат отличался простотой конструкции и технологичностью деталей (а, значит, и малой трудоёмкостью и стоимостью), большая часть которых изготовлялась методом холодной штамповки из листовой стали. Отсутствие жёсткого узла запирания не только устранило трудоёмкие операции по его отладке, но и разгрузило ствольную коробку, что позволило существенно снизить массу автомата (на 0,65 кг). Немаловажным экономическим фактором стало использование без каких-либо дополнительных доделок серийно выпускаемого магазина от АК-47.
Принцип действия автоматики был основан:
– на разгрузке патронника канавками большого поперечного сечения, что обеспечивало раннюю и эффективную разгрузку патронника;
– на подпоре гильзы в патроннике во время выстрела свободной массой инерционного тела, действующего на гильзу не непосредственно, а через рычаг, что создавало необходимый подпор гильзы малой массой свободного инерционного тела.
Перед выстрелом части затвора находятся в крайнем переднем положении, а именно:
– боевая личинка с ударником и выбрасывателем опирается на пенёк ствола;
– рычаг находится в почти вертикальном положении, опираясь нижней кромкой на упор перемычки ствольной коробки в её средней части, шейкой на боевую личинку, а верхними перьями воспринимает продольное давление вперёд от стебля затвора, подпираемого возвратной пружиной.
При выстреле давление от гильзы передаётся через боевую личинку на рычаг, который, опираясь на упор коробки, поворачивается и отбрасывает стебель затвора назад. За время разворота рычага давление в стволе падает до атмосферного, а стебель затвора получает запас кинетической энергии, достаточный для отката в крайнее заднее положение. Однако полностью оценить автомат Коробова по всем характеристикам не представилось возможным вследствие низкой живучести муфты ствола. Дело в том, что основная часть патронника, за исключением его задней части, была образована в стволе. Ствол монтировался с натягом в муфте, которая образовывала нижние стенки канавок и заднюю часть патронника длиной 8 мм.

В 1952 г. на испытания были представлены доработанные автоматы на основании заключения УСВ ГАУ от 24.08.51 г.

Проведённые в 1952 г. испытания показали, что по надёжности действия автоматики в нормальных и различных условиях эксплуатации, по живучести деталей автомат Коробова удовлетворяет ТТТ №3131 45 г. и имеет преимущества перед автоматом Калашникова в весе, по кучности боя для малотренированных стрелков, по простоте конструкции, освоения и изготовления. Вместе с тем, при испытаниях были выявлены низкая служебная прочность многих деталей и ряд конструктивных недоработок отдельных узлов, пе речень которых занял два листа.
В 1953 г. ЦКБ-14 подало на испытания доработанные автоматы Коробова. У этих автоматов патронник с канавками, за исключением пульного входа, был сформирован в муфте ствола, упрочнены практически все детали, а кадмирование подвижных частей (достаточно дорогое и вредное производство) заменено фосфатированием.
К этому времени были разработаны тактико-технические требования к новому автомату ТТТ № 006256 53 г. и испытания были проведены на их соответствие.
