Модальность ощущения – качество, по которому различаются ощущения. Кроме пяти общеизвестных модальностей [зрительной, слуховой, осязательной (кинестетической), вкусовой и обонятельной] различают такие модальности, как вестибулярная (чувство равновесия и положения тела в пространстве), температурная, вибрационная, проприоцептивная (чувство положения членов тела в пространстве) и др. В пределах одной модальности ощущения могут существовать разные качества составляющих их сенсорных впечатлений. Например, зрение (модальность) обладает следующими качествами сенсорных впечатлений: яркость (положение на серой шкале) и цвет (красный, зеленый, синий). Для каждой модальности существует свой орган чувств или его эквивалент (Большой психологический словарь, 2004).
